Big steps for 3-year-olds

GOOD LUCK!! and have A GREAT DAY!!!

ARCADIA, Calif. -- When Pioneerof the Nile won the CashCall Futurity seven weeks ago, he immediately became a leading West Coast contender for the Kentucky Derby, a position enhanced by the spiriting to Dubai of Midshipman, the Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner. But when he makes his first start as a 3-year-old on Saturday, in the $200,000 Robert Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita, the intent, trainer Bob Baffert acknowledges, is not to have Pioneerof the Nile at his peak.
all-about-horse-racing.blogspot.com
Pioneerof the Nile is in the unique position of having already earned a spot in the Kentucky Derby. How so? The Derby field is capped at 20 runners, 19 based on earnings in graded stakes races, with one slot allocated, for the first time this year, to the winner of an all-weather race in Britain. The amount of money Pioneerof the Nile already has in his account is well above the usual threshold for inclusion in the Derby field.
all-about-horse-racing.blogspot.com
Over the next 12 weeks, as 3-year-olds literally try to earn their way into the Derby, intent in prep races will be paramount, especially this far out. For Pioneerof the Nile on Saturday, "there's no urgency," Baffert said Thursday morning.

"Experience is what's important for him," Baffert said. "It's invaluable right now. It will be good to put him in different situations, see how he handles it, and how he learns from it."

That's not to say Pioneerof the Nile can't win. But there are others in the Lewis for whom a big race, and the accompanying graded earnings, is far more critical right now.

The Lewis, at 1 1/16 miles on Santa Anita's Pro-Ride surface, is one of five races with Derby implications on Saturday. All are around two turns. Of the remaining four, two are graded stakes, two are ungraded. One hour before the Lewis, the Eclipse Award-winning filly Stardom Bound will make her first start as a 3-year-old in the Grade 1, $300,000 Las Virgenes Stakes for fillies at one mile at Santa Anita. Her new owners, a partnership headed by IEAH Stables, have the Derby on her radar screen.

At Fair Grounds, a huge field of 13 has been entered in the Grade 3, $200,000 Risen Star Stakes, including Friesan Fire, Giant Oak, and the impressive maiden winner Soul Warrior. Like the Lewis, the Risen Star is at 1 1/16 miles. Unlike the Lewis, it is on dirt.

Less significant, but still worth following, are the $100,000 Whirlaway Stakes at Aqueduct, in which Haynesfield should be a heavy favorite going 1 1/16 miles, and the $50,000 WEBN Stakes at Turfway Park, which drew a nondescript field of 12 going one mile.

Nine are entered in the Lewis, which features a rematch between Pioneerof the Nile and I Want Revenge, who were separated by a nose at the end of the CashCall Futurity. I Want Revenge appeared to run in spots in that race, and he will be outfitted with blinkers in a race for the first time on Saturday.

Neither of those two colts, though, has much early speed, which might make Brother Keith dangerous. He blew the first turn in last month's San Rafael Stakes, and since he did it so early in the race, his past performance line, which shows him eight lengths behind after a quarter-mile, is deceptive; he actually was battling for the lead with The Pamplemousse for the first furlong before his antics. In addition, Brother Keith desperately needs graded stakes earnings.

"We're going to let him roll," Bobby Frankel, who trains Brother Keith, said Thursday. "I guess I tipped my mitt when I put Tyler on him."

Tyler Baze and Frankel combined to score a front-running upset with Mast Track last summer in the Hollywood Gold Cup.

Frankel said Brother Keith has "trained beautifully" since the San Rafael.

Papa Clem led from start to finish defeating maidens on Dec. 29, but his jockey, Rafael Bejarano, usually likes to stalk rather than force the issue. Charlie's Moment also could have contending early speed

If the pace is too hot, though, the race could set up for Shafted, who has the enticing combination of good form over the track and the need to get some graded stakes earnings. Shafted overcame a moderate pace to rally powerfully and defeat a first-level allowance field going 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita on Jan. 2.

"It doesn't look like there's a lot of pace, so we'll just have to see how it plays," said Mark Casse, who trains Shafted. "I want him to sit back and come running. That might not work on Saturday, but I don't want to change his game plan. I think he's doing even better than before his last race. He's really training well right now."

Tiago, Well Armed Clash in San Antonio

GOOD LUCK!! and have A GREAT DAY!!!
all-about-horse-racing.blogspot.com

by Jack Shinar

Tiago makes his first start since he rallied from far back for a third-place finish in the Oct. 25 Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) when he takes on 10 rivals in the $200,000 San Antonio Handicap (gr. II) at Santa Anita Feb. 8.

The two-time grade I winner heads a deep field in the 1 1/8-mile San Antonio, the last major prep locally for older horses with designs on the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I) March 7. Among those lining up to face Tiago on Santa Anita's Pro-Ride main track are grade I winners Well Armed, who is the defending San Antonio winner, and Champs Elysees, a turf standout in 2008 who carries top weight of 120 pounds.

Owned and bred by Jerry and Ann Moss, Tiago looks to snap a four-race losing skid in the San Antonio. The last victory for the 5-year-old son of Pleasant Tap came in April when trainer John Shirreffs shipped to Arkansas to win the Oaklawn Handicap (gr. II) by a head over Heatseeker. The big bay has proven his proficiency at Santa Anita, winning both the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) in 2006 and the Goodwood Stakes (gr. I) the following year.

In the Breeders' Cup Classic, held at Santa Anita, Tiago made a big move from next-to-last, rallying on the inside to nab third from Curlin as the top American finisher in the $5-million event. He finished 2 1/2 lengths behind the victorious Raven's Pass. Prior to that, Tiago finished second with another big late charge in the Sept. 27 Goodwood, one length behind Well Armed.

Tiago brings a 5-3-4 lifetime record into the San Antonio with earnings of $2,334,270. Regular rider Mike Smith will break Tiago from the 8 post under 119 pounds.

Following Well Armed's perfectly timed win under Aaron Gryder in the Goodwood, trainer Eoin Harty opted to go in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile instead of the Classic. But the race was loaded with trouble for the WinStar Farm homebred, who was made the 6-5 favorite. The son of Tiznow did not break with leaders, as he usually does, and was forced to steady a couple of times, struggling home ninth of 12.

Well Armed returned in the Jan. 10 San Pasqual Handicap (gr. II) as the 3-2 choice. He stalked the pacesetter Cowboy Cal into the lane, mounting a challenge mid-stretch. But Well Armed was steadied late and was tagged for third by San Antonio foe Magnum while two lengths behind Cowboy Cal.

Harty hopes to get his 6-year-old charge back on his game for the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) March 28, a race Well Armed finished third in last year.

Gryder will once again ride Well Armed, who won last year's San Antonio by a head over Heatseeker in a front-running effort at 14-1. The bay gelding has won six of 21 starts and earned $1,539,803. They will break from post 10 while also carrying 119 pounds.

The versatile 6-year-old Champs Elysees, trained by Bobby Frankel for Juddmonte Farms, ran eighth in the Breeders' Cup Classic. The British-bred son of Danehill, out of Hasili, returned to top form, however, with a half-length triumph in the Dec. 6 Hollywood Turf Cup (gr. IT), his most recent start. Third in the Santa Anita Handicap last year, Champs Elysees also won the Northern Dancer (Can-IT) on a yielding Woodbine grass course in September.

Garrett Gomez takes over on Champs Elysees, who is positioned between the other two big guns in the San Antonio in post 9. Champs Elysees has a career mark of 5-6-5 in 21 starts while earning $1,354,761. Champs Elysees worked five furlongs on the Pro-Ride Feb. 1 in 1:01.

Trainer Darrell Vienna is expecting a big effort from the Argentina-bred Magnum, who ran third in the San Pasqual at odds of 77-1 in his first start in nearly six months. The 8-year-old was gelded prior to the San Pasqual.

“He ran well,” said Vienna. “He had a problem with one of his testacles, so we gelded him about two or three months before the San Pasqual.”

Magnum’s only stakes win in 17 U.S. starts came in the 2006 Lone Star Park Handicap (gr. III). The son of El Compinche has a 5-3-2 record from 25 starts, with earnings of $699,249.

Informed, who was nosed by Cowboy Cal in the San Pasqual at odds of 28-1, breaks from the far outside post under Michael Baze with a feathery 113-pound impost. The 5-year-old son of Tiznow was floated out late by Cowboy Cal after making a four-wide bid to nearly get the upset. The bay horse seeks his first stakes win for Doug O'Neill.

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer opted for this spot rather than the Strub Stakes (gr. II) a day earlier for the 4-year-old Dakota Phone, who ran second to Nownownow with a big late charge in the San Fernando Stakes (gr. II) Jan. 17. The Zavata gelding will have to overcome the rail post but enlists the services of top jockey Rafael Bejarano.

The millionaire Becrux switches from the turf for trainer John Sadler following a fourth-place finish in the San Gabriel Handicap (gr. IIT) Dec. 28. The Team Valor and Gary Barber-owned 7-year-old Italian-bred gelding ran third in the Citation Handicap (gr. IT) at Hollywood Park a month before the San Gabriel. He also won a conditioned allowance race on Santa Anita's synthetic track during the Oak Tree meet last fall.

Winner of Holy Bull Stakes came out of race with chip in his left knee

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Saratoga Sinner, winner of Saturday's Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes, came out of the race with a chip in his left knee and is off the Kentucky Derby trail.

Saratoga Sinner, a son of Harlan's Holiday, is trained by Eddie Kenneally for the Lally Stable. A winner of a maiden race going nine furlongs earlier in the meet, Saratoga Sinner earned a career-best 96 Beyer Speed Figure for his victory in the nine-furlong Holy Bull.

"He'll leave for Kentucky this weekend and have surgery," said Kenneally. "If all goes well he should be back for a late summer and fall campaign. It's terrible timing more than anything and hopefully he'll come back 100 percent. He's worth waiting for."

Familiar Faces Entered in Mineshaft

GOOD LUCK!! and have A GREAT DAY!!!
all-about-horse-racing.blogspot.com

by Ryan Conley

A collection of familiar faces to Fair Grounds Race Course and Slots will line up Feb. 7 in the Mineshaft Handicap (gr. III), which is part of the six-stakes “Louisiana Derby Preview Day” card scheduled for the New Orleans-area track.

Eight horses are entered in the Mineshaft, which is for horses 4-years-olds and up at 1 1/16-miles on the main dirt track. Seven of the entrants have Fair Grounds' victories on their resumes, including the 2008 winner of the Mineshaft, and the top three finishers of the Jan. 10 Louisiana Handicap.

Defending Mineshaft winner Grasshopper, who tops the field with $820,352 in earnings and has a 4-6-2 record in 14 lifetime starts, is owned by W.S. Farish, Edward Hudson Jr., and Inwood Stable. Trained by Neil Howard, the 5-year-old son of Dixie Union will be ridden by regular rider Robby Albarado, who was aboard Grasshopper when he finished second to Street Sense in the 2007 Travers Stakes (gr. I).

Reigning Super Derby (gr. II) winner My Pal Charlie is making his 2009 debut after closing out last year with a fourth in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile won by Albertus Maximus. The 4-year-old son of Indian Charlie, who is owned by B. Wayne Hughes and trained by Albert Stall Jr., will carry a high weight of 121 pounds under jockey Curt C. Bourque.

Also in the field are the 1-2-3 finishers in this year’s Louisiana Handicap: James and Alice Sapara's Good and Lucky, Sand and Cee Stables' Secret Getaway, and Fox Hill Farm's grade III winner Honest Man.

Good and Lucky, a 6-year-old gelded son of Wild Rush, scored a one-length victory under Patrick Valenzuela over Secret Getaway in the 1 11/16-miles Louisiana Handicap, with Honest Man another 11/4-lengths back. Valenzuela gets the return mount on Good and Lucky, who is trained by Josie Carroll.

Honest Man, who is trained by Larry Jones and will be ridden by Gabriel Saez, joins Grasshopper, My Pal Charlie, and Jim Tafel’s Coragil Cat as graded-stakes winners entered in the Mineshaft. Honest Man, a 5-year-old son of Unbridled's Song, won last year's Philip H. Iselin Stakes (gr. III) at Monmouth Park, while Coragil Cat, a 5-year-old son of Forest Wildcat trained by Greg Geier, won the 2008 edition of the Hanshin Cup Handicap (gr. III) at Arlington Park.

Rounding out the field are Northwestern Stables’ Smokeyjonessutton and Stephanie Clark’s Brothers Nicholas, who will be ridden by Jamie Theriot and Edgar Prado, respectively.

Risen Star draws a field of 13

GOOD LUCK!! and have A GREAT DAY!!!
all-about-horse-racing.blogspot.com

By Marcus Hersh

Typically, fewer horses actually are entered in stakes races than are expected. Between wishful thinking from racing officials and second thoughts by horsemen, reality often fails to meet expectations.

Just the opposite happened Monday at Fair Grounds. An anticipated medium-sized field for the headliner among six Saturday stakes races, the Grade 3, $200,000 Risen Star Stakes, suddenly turned into a 13-horse field when the race was drawn late Monday morning. And while no one would have been shocked to see the Grade 3, $150,000 Silverbulletday draw something like a five-horse field, eight 3-year-old fillies were entered in that race.

Pleasant surprises all around - unless you are a person associated with Au Moon. Third in the Lecomte Stakes, Au Moon was hung out in post 13 for the Risen Star. Just inside him is Flying Pegasus, who apparently will make his 3-year-old debut at his Fair Grounds base, rather than traveling to Oaklawn Park for the Southwest Stakes. Likely favorite and Lecomte winner Friesan Fire drew well in post 6, with the well-regarded Giant Oak one stall to his outside. Friesan Fire is trained by Larry Jones, who also entered It Happened Again in the Risen Star. But trainer Steve Asmussen did Jones one better, putting three horses in the race - Uno Mas, Dumar, and Soul Warrior. The others in the Risen Star - a Louisiana Derby prep - are Map of the World, Indygo Mountain, Nowhere to Hide, Code of Honour, and Summer's Empire.

Just Jenda, who won the Tiffany Lass Stakes for Jones last out, heads the Silverbulletday field. The other fillies entered are Four Gifts, More of the Best, War Echo, Flying Spur, Garter Belt, Southern Yankee, and War Tigress.

The Risen Star will go as the last of the six stakes, with the Silverbulletday directly preceding, but the two stakes before the Silverbulletday also look appealing, with the Mineshaft Handicap especially deep this year. The eight-horse field in the Mineshaft includes recent Fair Grounds route stakes winners Secret Getaway and Good and Lucky; the 2008 Mineshaft winner, Grasshopper; the 2008 Super Derby winner, My Pal Charlie; and Grade 3 winner Honest Man, who had a bullet five-furlong work Monday morning.

The Grade 3 Fair Grounds Handicap drew eight grass entries, including last-start Fair Grounds stakes winner French Beret. But French Beret should face a stout challenge from up-and-comers Jimmy Simms and Diamond Tycoon, as well as Demarcation, who won the River City Handicap at Churchill Downs in his most recent start.

Saturday's other two stakes are the Pan Zareta, which should have Secret Gypsy as a strong favorite, and the Colonel Power, a turf sprint featuring a rematch between Storm Treasure and Chamberlain Bridge.

Castellano injured in spill

GOOD LUCK!! and have A GREAT DAY!!!
all-about-horse-racing.blogspot.com

Associated Press

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. -- Jockey Javier Castellano was hospitalized Saturday with an injured right shoulder after being thrown from his mount during a race at Gulfstream Park.

Castellano was sent to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Fla., after falling from Presto Change O in the day's third race. His status for Sunday's Gulfstream card, in which he has seven scheduled mounts, was unknown.

Castellano's mount clipped another horse early in that race, knocking him from the saddle.

Another jockey, Julien Leparoux, was dropped by his mount, Polished, at the start of the same race. Leparoux was uninjured and rode three winners after his spill, including guiding Saratoga Sinner to victory in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes.

Kentucky Derby Prep Race Results: Saratoga Sinner Wins Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park

Lally Stable’s 3-year-old Saratoga Sinner stamped his credentials as one of the Kentucky Derby contenders when he edged away to win Gulfstream Park’s $150,000 Holy Bull Stakes (G3) by 3/4 lengths at 14-1 over Bear Stable’s longshot pace-setter Bear’s Rocket.

A son of 2002 Florida Derby (G1) winner Harlan’s Holiday, Saratoga Sinner had broken his maiden last out over the Gulfstream Park race track and 1 1/8 miles distance on January 7 after a fifth- and third-place finish in 2 starts last year at Keeneland and Churchill Downs, home of the 2009 Kentucky Derby.

Trained by Eddie Kenneally, Saratoga Sinner stalked the pace set by Bear’s Rocket from the backstretch and went on to give jockey Julien Leparoux his third winner on the card and seventh in 2 days at Gulfstream.

Saratoga Sinner was timed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:51:45 over the fast track paying $26.80, $14.20 and $7.40. Bear’s Rocket, under jockey Kent Desormeaux, returned $27.80 and $11.40. West Side Bernie with jockey Elvis Trujillo aboard showed $3.60.

Lori and George Hall’s West Side Bernie rallied for third, 3 lengths behind the Holy Bull runner-up Bear’s Rocket, and John Oxley’s Beethoven checked in another half-length back in fourth in the Holy Bull field of 10.

Stately Character was fifth in Gulfstream Park’s Holy Bull Stakes followed by Bruce N Autumn, Danger to Society, Rockland, El Crespo and Idol Maker

Lansdon Robbins III and Sam Delaney’s Danger to Society was sent off the favorite at 9-5 but retired to finish seventh after racing close to the leaders early.
