ARCADIA, Calif. (AP)—Red Giant and Tropic Storm were declared out of their respective Breeders’ Cup races Sunday.
Red Giant was one of the favorites in the $2 million Turf next weekend at Santa Anita. He didn’t finish his feed from the previous night and had a high temperature Sunday.
“The timing of it, six days before the race, gave him no time to recover and no time to work,” said trainer Todd Pletcher, adding that owner John Fort had instructed him to make breeding plans for Red Giant, who likely has run his last race.
Red Giant, a 4-year-old colt bred in Kentucky, had a 6-3-1 record from 12 career starts, with earnings of $1,092,410.
Across town at Hollywood Park, trainer Craig Dollase said Tropic Storm was out because of a soft tissue injury. The 4-year-old colt was pre-entered in both the Sprint and the Turf Sprint.
Also Sunday, defending Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Curlin galloped two miles on Santa Anita’s Pro-Ride synthetic surface under exercise rider Carlos Rosas. Curlin is scheduled for a workout Monday.
Undefeated Casino Drive of Japan, who won his debut at Santa Anita last Sunday, galloped one lap around Hollywood Park’s Cushion Track and remains on course for the Classic, according to Nobutaka Tada, racing manager for owner Hidetoshi Yamamoto.
