Jockey Garrett Gomez was taken to the Arcadia Methodist Hospital after the 2-year-old colt he was aboard in the Eddie Logan Stakes at Santa Anita Dec. 27 ducked into the rail and threw him onto the turf.

According to an initial report from his agent Ron Anderson, Gomez was being X-rayed at the hosptial. The jockey knocked out some upper front teeth in the fall and has a gash is on his left knee and a swollen hand, Anderson said. He was reportedly moving his extremities and speaking.

It was unknown if Gomez would be released from the hospital during the evening or instead held overnight.

The pacesetter Back At You was leading the field for the one-mile grass event into the stretch when challenged in the lane on his outside by eventual winner Flashmans Papers. Back At You suddenly veered into the rail and fell, losing Gomez. Though he was on the ground for some time, Back At You rose to his feet under his own power and walked onto the horse ambulance.

“(Gomez) was pretty shook up when he first got (to the hospital), but as they were preparing him to be X-rayed, he really calmed down and he seemed to be getting stronger,” said Anderson.

Entering the Eddie Logan, the day's seventh race, Gomez was just $109,014 shy of Jerry Bailey’s all-time earnings mark of $23,354,960, which he established in 2003.

Gomez is scheduled to ride five horses on Dec. 28 at Santa Anita, including Proudinsky in the $150,000 San Gabriel Handicap (gr. II). The rider, who turns 37 on New Year ’s Day, is seeking his fourth straight national money title.

The Great Britain-bred Flashmans Papers ($14.20), ridden by Rafael Bejarano, went on to a half-length win over favored Kelly Leak.
