Lane’s End Breeders' Futurity (gr. I) winner Square Eddie, prepping for his 3-year-old debut in the San Rafael Stakes (gr. III) at one mile on Jan. 17 at Santa Anita, breezed six furlongs over the Hollywood Park main track Jan. 8 in a bullet 1:13 2/5.

“Fantastic,” trainer Doug O’Neill said of the drill. “He was by himself and absolutely cruising. He galloped out really strong and we’re looking forward to the San Rafael.”

Owned by J. Paul Reddam, the son of Smart Strike ran second to Midshipman in the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) in his final start of 2008, beaten by 1 1/4 lengths. In spite of that effort and his 4 3/4-length win in Keeneland's Breeders' Futurity, the chestnut colt was overlooked as a finalist in the Eclipse Award balloting for leading male 2-year-old of 2008.

Square Eddie began his career in England, winning once in four starts before transferring to the U.S. Out of the El Gran Senor mare Forty Gran, Square Eddie has a 2-2-1 record in six starts with earnings of $767,366.

The San Rafael is the first major West Coast test for 3-year-olds and a leading prep race for the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) on April 4.
