Kentucky Derby Prep Race: Rebel Stakes Entries at Oaklawn Park March 14

Old Fashioned, Fox Hill Farm’s undefeated Kentucky Derby favorite, heads a field of 9 horses in Saturday’s $300,000 Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park March 14.

Oaklawn’s 1 1/16-mile Rebel Stakes is one of the 2009 Kentucky Derby prep races.

Rebel Stakes entries with jockeys and weight in post position order:

Old Fashioned under jockey Ramon Dominguez carries 122 lbs.
Hamazing Destiny under jockey Terry Thompson, 115 lbs.
Poltergeist under jockey Quincy Hamilton, 117 lbs.
Pointing Home under jockey Julio Garcia, 115 lbs.
Wise Kid under jockey Jose Caraballo, 117 lbs.
His Greatness under jockey Larry Sterling Jr., 117 lbs.
Captain Cherokee under jockey Luis Quinonez, 117 lbs.
Silver City under jockey Jon Court, 117 lbs.
Win Willy under jockey Cliff Berry, 117 lbs.

In his last start, Old Fashioned won by 3 1/4 lengths over Silver City and 9 others in the Southwest Stakes, also one of the Kentucky Derby prep races, last February 16 at Oaklawn. Prior to the Southwest, Old Fashioned won by 7 1/4 lengths in Aqueduct’s Remsen Stakes.

The gray son of Unbridled’s Song–Collect Call now sports a record of 4 wins from 4 starts, with earnings of $323,280. His regular jockey Ramon Dominguez, will be at Oaklawn to handle the mount on Saturday. Old Fashioned posted his final Rebel workout on Sunday morning, when he zipped through fractions of :23.1 and :47.1, en route to a final 6 furlongs clocking of 1:12 breezing.

Like Old Fashioned, Silver City is a son of Unbridled’s Song. Silver City has a career record of 3 wins from 5 starts, 1 second and 1 third, building earnings of $142,971. Jockey Jon Court has replaced Miguel Mena on the mount for race horse trainer Bret Calhoun who also trains Old Fashioned.

Wise Kid, from the barn of Tim Ritchey, has made 3 career starts, all at Oaklawn this spring, but has made dramatic improvements with each. After finishing second by a neck to Buzzin and Dreamin in his first outing, he managed to get a win in his second start, in spite of racing very green in the stretch. Equipped with blinkers for his third start, he gained a measure of revenge, defeating Buzzin and Dreamin by 4 1/4 lengths. All of the races have been at 1 1/16 miles, earning him the start in the Rebel.

The Rebel Stakes is race horse race 10 in Oaklawn Park’s March 14 card. Rebel Stakes post time is 5:50 pm.
