Jockey Rafael Bejarano Injured at Del Mar

Jockey Rafael Bejarano sustained multiple facial fractures in his jaw, nose and orbital bones in the fall during the third race on opening day of the Del Mar meeting Wednesday.

Mi Rey, broke down, unseating jockey Rafael Bejarano, who appeared to have been clipped by a trailing horse. Mi Rey sustained a catastrophic injury to his right front leg and was euthanized.

A doctor who examined Bejarano at the track says he also may have injured his left shoulder. More X-rays at a hospital were planned.

The 27-year-old jockey Rafael Bejarano was admitted to the hospital and was expected to remain overnight. The doctor said Bejarano may have to undergo surgery to repair his facial injuries.

What devastating news for all concerned. It is always sad to lose a horse especially one with so much invested in it. Mi Rey will be missed. I hope Bejarano heels quickly and completely. This is sure to put a pallor over the rest of the day.
