Kodiak Kowboy, already a two time Grade 1 winner this year, will attempt to further sweeten his Eclipse Award resume with a victory in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Santa Anita on Nov. 7.
Kodiak Kowboy is coming off a half-length victory over Fabulous Strike in the Grade 1 Vosburgh on Oct. 3. The outing was the first for Kodiak Kowboy, a son of Posse, since being transferred from trainer Larry Jones to Steve Asmussen following his second-place finish in the Grade 1 Forego four weeks earlier. Kodiak Kowboy also won the Grade 1 Carter for Jones in April.
Kodiak Kowboy, who is owned in partnership by Vinery Stables and Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farm, has started only three times over synthetic surfaces, with one victory, which came as a 2-year-old at Woodbine.
"He's a solid horse and been consistent for everybody who has had him," Asmussen said in confirming the decision to send Kodiak Kowboy to the Sprint on Saturday. "He's already got two Grade 1 wins on his resume this year and has a lot at stake in the Sprint. We're absolutely worried about having to run on the Pro-Ride. I sure wish the race was on dirt."
Asmussen said Kodiak Kowboy would ship to California on Oct. 27 and have one work at Santa Anita before Breeders' Cup day.
