Florida Derby Winner Quality Road Has A Quarter Crack & Puts Doubt In 2009 Kentucky Derby

Florida Derby winner and one of the leading Kentucky Derby contenders Quality Road has a quarter crack in his right hind hoof, putting in doubt his status for the 2009 Kentucky Derby on May 2 at Churchill Downs.

Quality Road galloped at Belmont Park, home of the 2009 Belmont Stakes, and came back to the barn with blood dripping from his foot.

Race horse trainer Jimmy Jerkens said that he is “very concerned” about the problem but that it’s premature to say the colt won’t run in the Kentucky Derby 135.

Quality Road is the second of the Kentucky Derby entries to encounter a problem.

The Pamplemousse, one of the West Coast’s leading 3-year-olds, was scratched from last Saturday’s Santa Anita Derby because of a lesion in his left front leg. The Pamplemousse is expected to be out at least 6 months.

Jerkens said he discovered the quarter crack in the winner’s circle after Quality Road won the Florida Derby on March 28 at Gulfstream Park.

Quarter cracks can bleed and make a horse lame. Movement and stress on the hoof can spread the crack and prevent it from healing. Quarter cracks can come from a genetic disposition that causes a thin hoof wall.

“The fact that he’s not lame from it is a good thing,” Jerkens told the Daily Racing Form. “He galloped this morning and he was absolutely sound on it, but it did trickle a little blood, which means there’s still some friction going on in there. We have to get that inflammation out before we do anything.”

Hoof specialist Ian McKinlay, who famously worked on Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown’s quarter crack last year, is tending to Quality Road.

McKinlay replaced a previous patch with a special shoe last Friday, then on Sunday he put in a set of wires to stabilize the crack.

Jerkens said Quality Road could still run in the Kentucky Derby if the colt is able to complete 2 workouts before he’s scheduled to leave New York on April 28 for Louisville, Kentucky.

The Pamplemousse Out of Kentucky Derby

By Jack Shinar

The morning after the scratch of pre-race favorite The Pamplemousse from the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) due to a tendon flare-up, co-owner Alex Solis II said the promising colt is off the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) trail.

Later, Solis said The Pamplemousse would be out of action a minimum of six months.

“He has a small lesion (on the tendon in his left front leg) and we’ll do the best thing by the horse,” Solis said in updating the situaion.

Solis indicated that for the time being, the gray son of Kafwain would remain with trainer Julio Canani at Santa Anita.

“We’re grateful that Julio scratched yesterday," Solis said. "The Pamplemousse will run again. His time off will be indefinite, but it will be longer than six months.”

Canani scratched The Pamplemousse several hours before the Santa Anita Derby after a state veterinarian's check of the horse found "a little heat" in one of the colt's legs. Canani made the decision after consulting with his own veterinarian, Dr. Helmuth von Bluecher.

“He’s comfortable; he’s fine,” said Solis, son of top jockey Alex Solis, who is The Pamplemousse's regular rider. “He’s walking right now. He’s going to run again. He’s not finished, but he will not run in the Kentucky Derby.”

The Pamplemousse won the San Rafael (gr. III) and Sham (gr. III) stakes this season at Santa Anita. He has won his last three starts while earning $209,280 in five starts.

Wood: I Want Revenge rallies

By David Grening
Daily Racing Form

OZONE PARK, N.Y. -- Entering the Aqueduct starting gate, I Want Revenge was supposed to win Saturday's Grade 1 Wood Memorial. Two seconds after leaving the gate, he was supposed to have no chance.

But in a performance that could vault him to favoritism for the May 2 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, I Want Revenge overcame his brutal beginning to win the $750,000 Wood by 1 1/2 lengths over West Side Bernie. It was 1 1/4 lengths back to Just a Coincidence in third.

They were followed in the order of finish by Atomic Rain, Imperial Council, Cellar Dweller, Lord Justice, and Lime Rickey.

While confirming his affinity for dirt, I Want Revenge - who won the Gotham by 8 1/2 lengths here last month - showed a ton of heart, while his jockey, the 19-year-old Joe Talamo, displayed a calm, cool demeanor that belies his age.

At the break, I Want Revenge threw his head in the air and leapt with his front feet, breaking last and spotting the field four or five lengths. I Want Revenge trailed the field of eight while Lord Justice set fractions of 24.50 and 48.14 seconds for the opening half-mile.

Leaving the five-furlong marker, I Want Revenge split horses and moved into fifth. He drew ever closer by the quarter pole but was behind Imperial Council, with nowhere to run. At the three-sixteenths pole, he got pushed out into the five path by Atomic Rain. Leaving the eighth pole, I Want a Revenge split Just a Coincidence and West Side Bernie and drew clear while being just hand-ridden by Talamo.

"You just can't panic, you got to go with Plan B," Talamo said. "You can't really rush him up, you have to stay relaxed and let the race go like it is. At the half-mile pole he was moving so good, it was just a matter if he can get out. At the quarter pole, he was covered up, and then right when I found a seam I asked him to go and he just kicked it home."

I Want Revenge, who raced in the red, white, and blue colors of IEAH Stables, which this week bought half-interest in the horse from David Lanzman, covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.49 and returned $3.

"You got to be more impressed with him today; he overcame every obstacle you can imagine in a race and still prevailed," winning trainer Jeff Mullins said. "It's pretty special."

By bouncing back from his dismal sixth-place finish in the Lane's End Stakes with his runner-up performance in the Wood, West Side Bernie earned a berth in the Kentucky Derby, said his trainer, Kelly Breen.

Seven challenge 'Revenge' in Wood

By David Grening
Daily Racing Form

OZONE PARK, N.Y. -- While the 8 1/2-length romp by I Want Revenge in last month's Grade 3 Gotham Stakes was a bit of a surprise to his connections, a similar result in Saturday's $750,000 Wood Memorial won't be.

"It's almost scary for us; we think he's better now than he was going into the Gotham," co-owner David Lanzman said during a national conference call this week.

Lanzman became co-owner of I Want Revenge on Monday when he sold 50 percent interest in the colt to the International Equine Acquisitions Holdings Stable. Lanzman, who bred I Want Revenge, called it a "life-changing" transaction, and one in which he stipulated that Jeff Mullins remain as the colt's trainer. Also, as part of the deal, Lanzman became part-owner of the top filly Stardom Bound, who is running in Saturday's Ashland at Keeneland.

Lanzman, of course, will be at Aqueduct, where he will watch I Want Revenge break from the rail under Joe Talamo against seven rivals. I Want Revenge was installed as the 4-5 favorite by Aqueduct linemaker Eric Donovan.

A victory will send I Want Revenge to Louisville as one of the favorites for the Kentucky Derby on May 2. Meanwhile, the majority of the others in the field would need a one-two finish to even qualify for the Derby.

Imperial Council, the 2-1 second choice, will break from post 6 under Edgar Prado and needs a top-two finish to get into the Derby field. His trainer, Shug McGaughey, expects Imperial Council to be closer to the pace in the Wood than he was in the Gotham, when he rallied from eighth to be second.

Lord Justice was cross-entered in Saturday's Illinois Derby but his trainer, Todd Pletcher, said he will run in the Wood. Pletcher said his plan is to instruct jockey C.C. Lopez to put his horse on the lead.

"Just looking at the pace scenario we felt he could be the controlling speed,'' Pletcher said. ``

West Side Bernie has enough graded stakes earnings to get into the Kentucky Derby, but his connections did not want to go into the race off his sixth-place performance in the Lane's End Stakes. West Side Bernie will be coupled in the wagering with Atomic Rain, who finished second in the Remsen over this track last year. Both horses are trained by Kelly Breen for owners George and Lori Hall.

"I don't know why he ran such a poor race in Kentucky,'' Breen said of West Side Bernie. "Maybe we'll use that as a lackadaisical workout.''

Just a Coincidence makes his stakes debut for Nick Zito, the trainer of three Wood winners. Lime Rickey makes his dirt debut. Cellar Dweller will scratch out of a Friday allowance race to run in the Wood.

Derby Future Pool 3

by John Mucciolo

Charitable Man: Unbeaten Grade 2 winner as a freshman, this talented colt has yet to race as a sophomore and is up against it as far as a three-year-old campaign goes. Likely for the Blue Grass S. (G1) at Keeneland next week, and a strong showing there will surely send the ultra-talented prospect to the Derby.

Chocolate Candy: Consistent colt will get the acid test in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) this weekend after proving too good for Northern California foes. Still a question mark on dirt, but there is no doubting the fitness of this hard-trying sophomore.

Desert Party: U. A. E. Derby (UAE-G2) runner-up strung together a solid three-race series in the desert and appears to be primed for a solid Derby run. The expensive sophomore is still a question mark at 10 furlongs, though.

Dunkirk: Explosive blue-blood ran a huge race when second in the Florida Derby (G1), and he'd be a force to be reckoned with if he qualifies for the Derby field. The gray was the individual favorite in Pool 2.

Flying Private: Lane's End S. (G2) runner-up has shown vast improvement in a short period of time and hails from a barn that knows how to get a horse to the big race.

Friesan Fire: King of Louisiana put forth his best showing with a dominant win in the Louisiana Derby (G2) and must be considered one of the top choices going forward. The well-bred colt will train up to the Derby.

Giant Oak: Long-striding colt needs to quicken in a hurry to be considered among the top players on Derby Day, but a big showing in Saturday's Illinois Derby (G2) could set him up well.

Hold Me Back: Synthetic specialist looked the part in the recent Lane's End S. (G2) and will likely appear next in the Blue Grass S. (G1) on April 11. He's full of ability but flopped in his lone dirt attempt to date.

I Want Revenge: Gotham S. (G3) romper could make a great case with a similar effort in Saturday's Wood Memorial S. (G1). This top contender is bred to run all day and should have little trouble with 1 ¼ miles.

Imperial Council: Talented three-year-old showed good late energy in the Gotham S. (G3), when second. A big finish in the Wood Memorial S. (G1) on Saturday puts him squarely in the picture.

Mafaaz (GB): Kempton Challenge S. hero is a question mark on dirt, and it's hard to gauge his class, but we can find no fault in the connections. The colt is bred to run long and is in good hands.

Musket Man: Tampa Bay Derby (G3) winner will hope to prove that he can transform his top form in the Illinois Derby (G2) on Saturday in his Hawthorne debut.

Mr. Hot Stuff: Improving sophomore will have to step up in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) on Saturday to qualify for the Derby, but the well-bred sophomore's form makes him intriguing.

Old Fashioned: Pool 1 favorite lost for the first time when collared late in the Rebel S. (G2), but he's never run a bad one and he will be the horse to beat in the upcoming Arkansas Derby (G2) next Saturday.

Papa Clem: Speedster has run second to a pair of nice ones and will next be seen in the Arkansas Derby (G2) at Oaklawn Park. A top-three effort should get him in the Derby field, and he has a lot of upside.

Pioneerof the Nile: Impressive colt is perfect from three tries with Bob Baffert and will get his stiffest test to date in Saturday's Santa Anita Derby (G1). Win or lose, the colt has proven to be top class and should be a major player in the Derby if he takes to the dirt.

Quality Road: Florida Derby (G1) hero has passed the two-turn test and gives every impression of a serious player come Derby Day. The Kentucky-bred could be set up for a career showing in four weeks.

Regal Ransom: U.A.E. Derby (UAE-G2) upsetter flashed brilliance as a juvenile and seems to be getting better at the right time. He's still a question mark at the distance, but his upward form is positive.

Take the Points: San Felipe S. (G2) runner-up has put in a pair of strong races in succession and remains an interesting sleeper for a top barn. The gray will be seen in the Blue Grass S. (G1) next Saturday.

Terrain: Consistent colt showed a nice turn of foot when third in the Louisiana Derby (G2) off the shelf, and he has already amassed enough graded earning to make the Derby field. The Blue Grass S. (G1) is likely the next stop for the gelding.

The Pamplemousse: Unbeaten at two turns, the speedy colt will get a stern test in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) on Saturday. Synthetic performer is a question mark on dirt, but he's plenty fast and has improved with every race.

Theregoesjojo: Florida Derby (G1) third is short on graded earnings and weakened through the stretch in his two-turn debut. He's a definite outsider.

Win Willy: Rebel S. (G2) upsetter has never lost on dirt and could prove that his latest was no fluke in the Arkansas Derby (G2) on April 11. Late-bloomer is a wildcard.
