Field hammered to 3-2 in Derby future bet

Marty McGee,
Daily Racing Form

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - For the 12th time in as many years, the mutuel field is the favorite in Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which closed Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern following a three-day betting window.

The field, the 24th or "all others" alternative to 23 separately listed interests, closed as the 3-2 favorite in the first of three futures pools. Juvenile champion Lookin At Lucky was next at 8-1, followed by Buddy's Saint (10-1), then by a cluster of eight horses in the 20-1 to 28-1 range.

Five Pool 1 field horses have wound up winning the Derby in the 11 years since Churchill Downs first offered parimutuel futures in 1999, including Mine That Bird last year. If ultimately successful, a $2 win payoff of $5 on the field would be the lowest in futures history; the record low is $5.60 on the field in 2004.

Combined win and exacta handle on Pool 1 was just $466,048, fourth-lowest in the 12-year futures history and a decrease of 3 percent from last year, when $478,721 was handled. Win handle for the 2010 Pool 1 was $385,995, and exacta handle was $80,053. The record handle for a Pool 1 was $620,362 in 2005, the same year the record of $1,665,990 for the highest three-pool aggregate handle was established. The lowest Pool 1 handle of $267,748 came in the inaugural year.

This was the first year that a Pool 1 included exactas; they were first offered during Pool 2 of 2009. The lowest $2 will-pay for a Pool 1 exacta was the combination of Lookin At Lucky over the field (Nos. 12-24), worth $51.20, while the second-lowest was $53.20 for the reverse of that combination. Four exactas among the numerous five-figure will-pays tied for the highest price of $18,526.60, and those were the combinations of 4-13, 13-21, 18-4, and 18-5.

Four separately listed interests in Pool 1 were active during the wagering period: Dave in Dixie and American Lion, the second and third finishers Saturday in the Robert B. Lewis at Santa Anita, and Rule and Uptowncharlybrown, the first and third finishers Saturday in the Sam F. Davis at Tampa Bay Downs. Two more separate interests, Dublin and Conveyance, were scheduled to race Monday in the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park.

This is the first year Churchill is offering the futures during a three-day window (Friday-Sunday), down from the traditional four days, with Thursdays being scrapped.

"We're very pleased with how it went," Churchill spokesman John Asher said Sunday evening. "Even with the one fewer day, I thought fans stepped right in. We're still looking at things down the road that maybe could spice up the Future Wager and maybe boost the handle up, but overall, I think this was a good start to our three pools for this year."

Derby Pool 2 is set for March 5-7 and Pool 3 for March 26-28. Only one futures pool is being offered this year on the April 30 Kentucky Oaks; it will coincide with Derby Pool 2 and will not offer exactas.

Future wager results are predicated on the results of the 136th Kentucky Derby on May 1 at Churchill. All wagers are non-refundable.
