Kentucky Derby Prep Race Results: Saratoga Sinner Wins Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park

Lally Stable’s 3-year-old Saratoga Sinner stamped his credentials as one of the Kentucky Derby contenders when he edged away to win Gulfstream Park’s $150,000 Holy Bull Stakes (G3) by 3/4 lengths at 14-1 over Bear Stable’s longshot pace-setter Bear’s Rocket.

A son of 2002 Florida Derby (G1) winner Harlan’s Holiday, Saratoga Sinner had broken his maiden last out over the Gulfstream Park race track and 1 1/8 miles distance on January 7 after a fifth- and third-place finish in 2 starts last year at Keeneland and Churchill Downs, home of the 2009 Kentucky Derby.

Trained by Eddie Kenneally, Saratoga Sinner stalked the pace set by Bear’s Rocket from the backstretch and went on to give jockey Julien Leparoux his third winner on the card and seventh in 2 days at Gulfstream.

Saratoga Sinner was timed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:51:45 over the fast track paying $26.80, $14.20 and $7.40. Bear’s Rocket, under jockey Kent Desormeaux, returned $27.80 and $11.40. West Side Bernie with jockey Elvis Trujillo aboard showed $3.60.

Lori and George Hall’s West Side Bernie rallied for third, 3 lengths behind the Holy Bull runner-up Bear’s Rocket, and John Oxley’s Beethoven checked in another half-length back in fourth in the Holy Bull field of 10.

Stately Character was fifth in Gulfstream Park’s Holy Bull Stakes followed by Bruce N Autumn, Danger to Society, Rockland, El Crespo and Idol Maker

Lansdon Robbins III and Sam Delaney’s Danger to Society was sent off the favorite at 9-5 but retired to finish seventh after racing close to the leaders early.
